Synopsis
Fv Julian Paul ran aground then sank while leaving Le Dibien, France.
Action taken:
As a consequence of problems identified by the crew of the Julian Paul when trying to release the liferaft from its lashing, a survey of the quick release arrangement for liferafts on a number of fishing vessels was undertaken. This confirmed there was a widespread problem with the operation of senhouseslip quick release arrangements. (The MAIB has highlighted this problem by issuing a widely distributed Safety Bulletin.)
The Chief Inspector has also made two recommendations to the owners of the vessel with reference to:
-
The quick release mechanisms fitted to the liferaft.
-
Safety Training of the crew.
