Synopsis
This car/passenger chain ferry was approaching the Studland slipway during one of its routine crossings. When about 25 metres from the slipway, one of the main chains moved. This movement was normal and built into the design.
A young child was standing on the chain as it moved. Unfortunately, this caused her foot to become trapped against a fixed bracket, causing serious injury.
Action taken:
To avoid a similar accident occurring in the future the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has made a recommendation to Bournemouth– Swanage Motor & Road Ferry Company on:
