Synopsis

A fatal accident occurred on the bulk carrier, St Georgij, whilst routine maintenance was being carried out on the vessel's auxiliary boiler burner system.

Action taken:

The Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the owners and managers of St Georgij recommending the following:

  • review of safe working practices

  • improvements in key personnel's ability to read English instruction books or have manuals translated into the working language of the crew

  • improving the issue of PPE for crewmembers joining the ship
